Religion

In the centuries since humanity began to expand out from Earth, religion has experienced a great deal of changes. For a time, humanity seemed to have moved on from the need for theological explanations to the world around them, and many of the world’s religions became much more relaxed. Spirituality was still rather vogue, but organized religious institutions shrank, and became increasingly rare the farther one got from Earth.

Of course, that’s not to say that religion has been eliminated. Instead, in may places it has simply evolved with the times, with new churches springing up to fill theological gaps, old religions finding common ground and becoming stronger for it, and even some religious practices older than recorded memory have made a resurgence in recent years.

  • The Universal Church of Humanity – The UCH is a combined version of the Abrahamic religions, toning down the tradition of divine miracles with an emphasis on philosophical and moralistic teachings that can be derived from such tales. It teaches peace and unity, and that God created the greater Cosmos as a second Garden of Eden that humanity would attain once it has transcended and reached spiritual fulfillment. To this end, a new Manifest Destiny is strongly preached by church members, and many UCH members are among the first volunteers for new colonies, more than happy to spread the gospel of humanity to virgin soil. Because of this, the UCH is especially prominent on colony worlds, enjoying a following of a large minority of a colony’s population.
  • Christianity, Judaism, and Islam – The Abrahamic religions proper have had a bit of a falling out after Earth’s ecological collapse, especially in Judaism and Islam. Christianity, for a time, had a strong resurgence in the first years that humanity withdrew to the arcologies, as many believed this to be a second Flood as punishment for humanity’s sinning, but after the requisite forty days and nights had passed, and then a decade after that, many became disillusioned and began to look for religion in other places. That said, these religions are still incredibly popular on Earth, even diminished. It seems that trapped in the fortress-cities of the arcologies, many still cling to their faiths to get them through the day, and find solace from the armada storms that threaten to kill everyone within.
